Wherever you travel in the world, you will more than likely be forced to clear security before you can get on with your trip. Frequent flyers are known to clear security like a fresh breeze, and with the right tips you can do the same. Last month my all inclusive to Hawaii trip was a blast and I used these tips. Think ahead, so you’re not doing all of this just as you get to the head of the line.
Empty your pockets of loose change. Put the change in the small bins provided by security and add in your cell phone and wallet. Belt buckles, watches and necklaces will always set off the alarm, so make sure to place them in your carry bag or in the bin before it is your turn to walk through and be scanned.
Consolidate books and snacks so you won’t have as many things to gather back together once you’ve been screened.
When traveling through an American airport, you will also have to take off your shoes. Always wear shoes that can quickly be slipped off and on. If you have to wear tied or zippered shoes you can do some damage control by undoing the ties or zippers before it is your turn to be scanned. (Take care when you put them back on that you don’t trip before you’re put back together!)
You can carry a quart or liter plastic bag to contain liquids, gels and creams, but you have to place it in the bin with your other belongings. Make sure all of your liquids are 3 ounces (100 ml) or less. There shouldn’t be any loose liquids in your carry-on bag. If you have “medically necessary” liquids or baby food, in most countries, those can be outside of your plastic bag allowance, but you must notify a screening officer.
Make sure to place items in your bin in an orderly fashion. If you put things through the screening in the right order, you’ll be able to put yourself back together faster afterward. Consider one good way to decide the order.
First put your shoes, coat and your carry-on “personal item” (usually your smaller bag) in the first bin. They will come through the x-ray first, and you can be putting them back on while you’re waiting for your other items to be screened.
When carrying a laptop on-board, have the case scanned first so you can slip the laptop immediately inside once it clears.
If it’s going to take you a long time to put your shoes back on, collect all of your belongings and move to the side so the line doesn’t get jammed up. Most airports will place chairs near the security lines so you can use them to put your shoes and other items back on after clearing.
You gain nothing but upset travelers and annoyed security agents if you stand in the line putting on your shoes with your belongings blocking the belt. Security agents in airports have reported that about half of the back-ups experienced in security checkpoint lines come directly from people who stand at the front putting their personal belongings back on…there is no need for that to occur! Be careful when bringing on plants as this can cause issues too. I was not able to bring my Frangipani I bought while in Hawaii. It was the only thing that slowed me down on this trip
It doesn’t matter how often you travel…you will now breeze through those security lines all around the world as if you are on a plane every day!
