Are you looking forward to spend your holidays to Tenerife? Are you looking for adventure? Do you want to feel that surging adrenalin rush? If yes, then you may want to step into your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and pull out your trekking pole to climb Mount Teide.
Mount Teide is actually an active volcano situated on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. At 3,718 meters, it is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the Atlantic islands. Climbing the mountain would be a satisfying personal accomplishment considering that it is the third highest volcano in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Mount Teide is the centerpiece of the Teide National Park, an 18,900-hectare protected area that was officially named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29, 2007. Its magnificent natural beauty makes it one of the most frequently visited national parks in the world.
The nutrient- and mineral-rich soil around the park makes the area extremely fertile, supporting a large number of plant species. In fact, there are 168 vascular plant species in the park, 33 of which are endemic to Tenerife.
There are forests of Canary Island Pine blanketing the volcano’s slopes. The weather at higher altitudes provide sufficient conditions for fragile species such as the Canary Island cedar to flourish. Flowering plants such as white broom, wallflower, daisy, and violet, all of which have adapted to the extreme conditions on the volcano, are the dominant species.
In addition, the park has a large variety of invertebrate fauna, more than 40 percent of which are endemic species. Here you can see strange and unique spiders, beetles, hemipterans, dipterans, and hymenopterae. Birds such as the blue chaffinch, Bethelot’s pipit, wild canary, and kestrel are plentiful in the Teide skies.
You may find the rare endemic reptiles such as the Canary Island lizard, gecko, and skink. There are also mammals that roam around the park such as bats, mouflon, rabbit, house mouse, black rat, feral cat, and Algerian Hedgehog.
