A Checklist for You’re Upcoming Vacation Oct 07

There’s always lots to think about when planning a trip, so it’s easy to forget things. This handy checklist was created to help you remember the important stuff.

1. Your Passport and Any Visas
Always keep your passport current and up-to-date. Make certain you’ve obtained any visas that are required for the countries you plan to visit.

2. Have All Your Tickets- Plane, Bus, Train, Etc.
Even in the age of the e-ticket, it still makes sense to print out all the tickets, including your airline tickets, or have the information available on your laptop, tablet or smart phone. By doing so you’ll have any important information readily available, should it be required.

3. Accommodation Reservations or Vouchers
As mentioned above, even if you reserved your accommodations online, be sure to have the reservation confirmations, and hotel information, with you.

4. International Medical Travel Insurance
Make certain you have your international travel insurance and medical insurance documents with you. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you need that documentation only to realize that you left them at home.

5. Money
It’s common now for most travelers to use credit and/or debit cards. Travelers checks are still used by a few of us, as well. However, it’s also a good idea to have some local currency with you. Make an effort to obtain some of the local currency before you travel so you can get the best exchange rate.

6. Essential Contact Information
If you booked through a travel agent, you should have their contact information with you. And, ask if they have any contacts in your destination country as well.

Make sure you have the correct phone numbers for your banks and credit cards. You will need to contact them if your cards are lost or stolen.

7. Things to Put in Your Carry-On Luggage
It seems to be unavoidable at times – lost luggage. It’s unsettling enough to have to deal with this, but arriving at your hotel without your toothbrush or deodorant can be really annoying.

There are some hotels that offer free, small toiletries packages for guests that have forgotten theirs, but some don’t.

Reminder: Keep all the toiletries in your carry-on luggage within the guidelines set by the airlines.

8. Cellular Phone
In order to stay in touch, and to let other people be able to contact you, think about taking your mobile phone with you when traveling. Check with your service provider about coverage in the country you’re visiting and ask about any possible roaming charges.

9. Other Languages
A “universal translator” like those used in Star Trek would sure be nice. However, there are many advanced devices available right now. Or, you can use a low-tech version – the ever-faithful phrase book.

10. Prescription Drugs and Immunization
Prior to your departure date, find out if there are any vaccination you need to have for your destination country. If there are – get them!

Take any essential medications with you along with the doctor’s prescription in case any of them are questioned. Some countries impose drastic penalties if they suspect you of attempting to smuggle controlled substances.

11. Avoid Over-Packing
Some essential are things like a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, dress shirts or blouses, dress pans or skirts/dresses, dress shoes and walking shoes. Select items that you can mix and match and that can be laundered along the way.

12. Something to Read
If you’ll be spending extended periods of time on planes, buses, trains, ships, etc. then make sure you bring along some reading material – books, magazines, crossword puzzles and more.

This checklist was designed to help you have a stress-free trip.
